Mushrooms are actually a variety of fleshy, umbrella-shaped fungi (singular:fungus). They are very strange organisms because they have no stems, leaves or roots. They feed on tissues of other plants or animals, living or dead. They look like plants at first sight, but their cell walls are made not of cellulose but chitin, the hard substance that is found in animals horns and claws. Yet they can be call animals! Fungi like mushrooms belong to a kingdom of their own.
Mushrooms grow in forests and grassy areas and for the most part are invisible, till a shower of rain brings them out. Then one can see mushrooms and toadstools at the base of a tree, in wide rings on the ground or in lines along a rotting tree trunk. This sudden, almost overnight growth is characteristic of mushrooms. In fact, the stinkhorn mushrooms grow so fast, it can be heard! In just 20 minutes, it reaches its full size.
What is seen above the ground, are the branching threads which absorb food and water for the developing mushroom and hold it upright. The fruiting body of a mushroom consists of a stalked topped by a round cap. On the underside of the cap are thin, vertical plates called ‘gills’.
The spores or ‘seeds’ of the mushroom are minute and easily distributed by the wind. It is estimated that a single mushroom discharges ten thousand million spores from the ‘gills’ in the few days before it decays.
Though there are around 1800 species of edible, non-poisonous mushrooms, there are mainly that contain harmful toxins. Since there is no simple test to tell whether a mushroom is poisonous or not, wild mushrooms are best left alone.

“Black box”
means
The “black box” isn’t black. It is orange. Before airlines made that color standard for their flight recorders, some Boeings used a yellow sphere, and the British had a gizmo called the Red Egg.
So, why is it called “black”?

One explanation goes this way:
In 1939, an aviation engineer named Francois Hussenot devised a means of capturing an aircraft’s history to a box of photographic film. Onboard sensors flashed into the box through calibrated mirrors and traced a running tab of flight parameters, including altitude, airspeed and the position of the cockpit controls. Because the device worked like a camera, its insides had to be in total darkness; thus, perhaps, the “black”-ness of the box.
After the war, technology for flight recorders became widespread. Some devices used photography ; others scratched the data onto spools of metal foil.
None recorded cockpit audio, however.
Then in 1953, an Australian chemist named David Warren was asked to help find the cause of recent jet plane crashes. “I kept thinking to myself…If only we could capture those last few seconds,” he told an interviewer in 1985, Â “it would save all this argument and uncertainty. ”
Warren’s version of the device stored audio to a bobbin of magnetized steel wire. Â In his telling, the name “black box” came from a British government official, who in 1958 referred to it using World-War-II-era Air Force slang for subtle avionics.
By the mid-1960s, flight-data and cockpit voice recorders were mandatory for commercial airplanes. Photographic film and magnetic wire were replaced by other storage media (the kind used in flash drives).
Some have advocated that black boxes should beam their data up to satellites as a flight progresses.
Black boxes must be painted orange or bright yellow, but they needn’t look like boxes. According to Federal Aviation Administration regulations, the device may come in a variety of shapes- including spheres, cylinders and domes- so long as it’s not too small for investigators to find among the plane’s debris. It should have a label on its side, with letters at least one inch high that spell out: “FLIGHT RECORDER- DO NOT OPEN”.

Can you run a thread through a block of ice without splitting the block into two pieces?
Let’s find out.

What you need: A block of ice, two rectangular pieces of wood, a string and some weight.
What you do:
What you see:
The string cuts through the ice and comes out completely but the block of ice doesn’t get split into two pieces.
Why does this happen?
Ice melts when pressure is applied and freezes again when the pressure is released. When weight is attached to the loop, the string is pulled down because of the pressure applied by the weight at the top. The part of the ice that is touching the string melts making the string slip downwards.
As the string goes lower down, the pressure at the top is reduced and the melted ice gets frozen. This process continues as the string passes through the entire block and hence the block of ice remains intact though the string cuts through it.
